What is a lab school?

A lab school is a learning environment where new teaching methods are tested and improved to create the best possible experience for students. At Khan Lab School, we focus on helping students learn at their own pace, develop independence, and take ownership of their education.

What does self-pacing mean?

Instead of moving through lessons at the same speed as everyone else, students move forward when they’re ready. Some students may go faster in certain subjects, while others may take extra time to fully understand a concept. The goal is to ensure every student builds a strong foundation before moving on.

What is mastery-based learning?

Students don’t just memorize information for a test—they learn it deeply. They have multiple chances to practice and show what they know. Teachers guide them, give feedback, and help them improve until they’ve truly mastered a skill or concept.

What does a typical day look like?

Students take part in lessons, independent work, small-group activities, and hands-on projects within a flexible schedule that helps them learn at their own pace while staying on track academically. Learning goes beyond the classroom with field trips, internships, and real-world projects, giving students valuable experiences that build skills, purpose, and independence.

What do teachers do in this model?

Teachers coach and support students instead of just lecturing. They help students set goals, stay on track, and get extra help when needed. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, teachers work closely with each student to guide their learning.

How do students make friends and work with others?

Students collaborate every day through projects, discussions, and group activities. They learn alongside peers of different ages and skill levels, which helps them develop strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.

How does your school prepare students for college and beyond?

We teach students how to learn, manage their time, and solve problems independently. Our students take advanced classes when they’re ready, work on real-world projects, and gain the confidence to succeed in college and beyond.
